Dave Kopay was the first former NFL player to come out. He came out in a time when there wasn’t a chance in hell that an openly gay player would ever be accepted in professional sports. Was he extraordinarily brave, ill-advised or just crazy? I like to think that he had a superhero-sized helping of character and personal integrity in his make up.
