What We’re Up Against Dept.: ‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens (Via The Onion)

29 May

We expect The Onion to supply us with laughs. Usually ones based on the ironies of a warped culture. This post by the satirical news organization goes way beyond that:

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens | The Onion – America’s Finest News Source.

The demented little shit who committed these atrocities has now become famous and gone on to the growing list of infamous freaks willing to lash out at innocent victims and reap the ultimate price. These cowards always off themselves before they are made to pay the price for their own responsibility. How fortunate he had a gun with which to dispatch his worthless hide before we could punish him.

Meanwhile, Professional Asses like  Samuel “Joe The Plumber” Wurzelbacher haven’t the decency to wait to voice their sicko opinions about the right to bear arms.

The greater majority of US citizens believe that insane people need to be kept from possessing weapons. And most of us do not believe that all people need to lose access to firearms. But the NRA, an organization funded primarily by gun manufacturers, works tirelessly to foment fear among its gullible members. Too many fully believe that the coming totalitarian regime will be knocking on their doors tomorrow to seize their hunting rifles and the pistols they use for target practice. (The extremist militia backing wealthy cattle rancher Cliven Bundy are cut from this crazy cloth. As was Timothy McVeigh.) I’m not saying it can’t happen, but this line of fear-driven rhetoric has been spewed since before Charlton Heston was the mouthpiece for the organization and he’s been gone a long while. Like the apocalypse that is always just around the corner, it has yet to happen. And our dangerous despotic President-Of-Color has yet to make it happen. Slacker.

Something should have “given” after Aurora and Newtown, but instead of reason and owning up to the responsibility to keep guns out of the hands of suicidal lunatics what we got was increased pro-gun lobbying, the hysterical fear tactics of the latest NRA mouthpiece, Wayne Lapierre,  and our Do-nothing Congress ignoring the will of the people (Standard Operating Procedure these days.) As long as the gun lovers, gun makers and their standard-bearer organization have the huge funds to buy political favor no one will be banning the use of firearms in this country. Not even–“I like a donation from those esteemed companies, too!”–Obama.

The straw that broke the beast’s back is getting heavier as I write this. The horror in Santa Barbara is causing people to again reexamine exactly where they stand on this issue and causing those of us who want a more mature and reasoned (nuanced?) take on the problem to be seriously considered. As I have asked before, If not now? When?

The next time an angry drunk aims his gun at his five-year old child’s head (not to mention his wife and the arresting officer) a hard-assed and realistic law should be in place. Get help, get sober enough to own guns or forever relinquish their use. In a country where wacko politicians routinely pass bills that allow gun-toting cretins the ability to “Stand Their Ground” (“Say “boo” and I’ll shoot your sorry ass!”) and carry weapons wherever they go (as they can now do with impunity in Georgia) critical mass of weapons possession passed long ago. Over 300 million citizens and a gun for every one. Wow, we should all be super proud of that statistic.

Free Country my ass! An armed and dangerous country filled with paranoid and deluded fools is a better description. But rather than pry the guns from their cold, dead hands let’s get them out of the hands of the those who need proper psychiatric treatment first. Or it could be that one of your loved ones–or you yourself–will be the next innocent victim. (I can spread fear, too. Especially, when it is so well founded.)
