. . . certainly not the same as the old Aquaman.
It appears that Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa has been cast as Aquaman in Superman vs Batman (oops, that’s the name I would prefer in deference to Supes status, anyway . . .) Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Mr. Momoa has starred on television and appeared as Conan The Barbarian in the remake of the same name. He’s had an interesting and somewhat charmed life except for a little incident in a nightclub where he met a broken glass face on. I guess he wasn’t meant to continue being a total pretty boy. The scars will give him some character I hope.
I have no idea how Mr. Momoa will do as Aquaman other than I can readily believe he’s an excellent swimmer. He’s the nephew of two noted surfers. He certainly wasn’t cast to look like the Aquaman we all know from comic books. I don’t want to try to fathom the idea that the film’s producers are going to cut his hair and dye it blond or put him in a wig of some sort. Hopefully, the casting choice is consciously going against type (at least in coloring) and playing on Mr. Momoa’s physical strengths and athletic prowess as well as his good looks. I doubt that Aquaman will have much screen time in the movie or the role will be very demanding. Still, the character has his fans and there will be high expectations among them. Personally, I think Mr. Momoa is a fine choice for the character and, should they make an Aquaman solo movie, he’d be able to fill the part’s stature and gravitas. Another frightening thought would be that they would play the character for laughs. Much as what happened in the animated TV series, “Batman: The Brave and The Bold“. That would be a major bone-headed move.
Anyway, here’s wishing the young man success in a film that has to be great because so much is riding on its success.
