The rainbow flag flies high over Nelson’s Column at Trafalgar Square in the heart of London as gay marriage has become official across Britain today.
Congratulations to all those gay men and women who now have the right to have their love legally recognized in another civilized country.
Let the bells of freedom and joy ring loud and clear!
Back when Bryan Singer, gay wunderkind director/screenwriter extraordinaire (“The Usual Suspects”, “Apt Pupil”), had fulfilled his superhero-fan artistic promise with “X-Men 2”, fans of the Marvel comics stalwarts hoped for great things ahead. They never came. Singer sat out directing chores on “X-Men 3” and it showed substantially. He went on to pay homage to Superman in the lackluster reboot, “Superman Returns”, and, since that poor performer left screens everywhere, he has directed one mega-bomb (“Jack The Giant Slayer”) and stuck to being a producer of television ventures for the most part. Now Mr. Singer returns to the helm directing the sequel to 2011’s excellent “X-Men: First Class” (which he also provided the story for) and hope springs anew that he might deliver the X-Men film fans feel is in him with “X-Men: Days Of Future Past“. Come May we will know if he’s done a real hat trick or something minor instead. What with the recent announcement that he will be directing “X-Men: Apocalypse” for 2016 release, we can only pray it is the former option.
Well there’s always the wonderfully visceral Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Just his sexual charisma alone might keep this boat afloat.
Plus there’s Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. This is one cast that knows how to deliver fine acting chops.
So our hopes might be rightly placed. “X-Men: First Class” and “The Wolverine” have led to this pay off. Let’s hope 20th Century Fox Studios and Marvel are on a roll and Bryan Singer has returned to form. Too much to expect? With all this talent and money investment it’s too much not to expect great things.

If any hero has been over-represented on film it would have to be Hercules. Few films have ever bothered to retain all of the correct details of the legendary hero’s acts or of his sordid history. Come July the latest entry in the portrayal of the demigod arrives starring Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as The Rock. Johnson has declared that this is “the role I was destined to play” (paraphrased). And, to my surprise, this teaser trailer shows that he may indeed be right.
My favorite Hercules out of the legion of musclebound “actors” to play the role (Reg Park, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Kevin Sorbot and Disney’s dreadful animated imagining among them) would have to be Steve Reeves. That Reeves was one of the most beautiful bodybuilders ever was fine casting for his limited emotive abilities in the cheap Italian productions he was the star of during the Sixties such as “Hercules Unchained”. But, for these times, Reeves would be entirely too pretty and too small for the role. In classical depictions of Hercules he doesn’t look as beautiful as Reeves was. The hero was bulky and brawny and definitely more attractive for his amazing strength than his facial features. Johnson does fit the role to a T and he certainly has the physical prowess to project that the demigod is, in fact, all man and all muscle. I’m not expecting terrific acting from Johnson. All I’d like from this beef-fest is that he makes me believe he is Hercules for at least 90 minutes or so.
If the dozen “Labors of Hercules” all come off looking as good as the Erymanthian Boar does in this clip I will be singing my praises. However, my expectations are that somewhere, just as in every former film and TV adaptation featuring this character, the makers will fuck-up royally. In some cases as in “The Legends of Hercules” syndicated television series the character was reduced to little more than a joke. It would be nice to see the legend treated with a modicum of respect and dignity for a change.
This is the chance for Johnson to become a real star the way the “Conan” movies transformed Arnold Schwarzenegger from an Austrian muscular oddity, which was how Hollywood saw him back then, to a fixture of action films and comedies. Granted Johnson has far more performances under his belt than Arnold did back then. Still, I for one, hope he can pull it off.
Here is proof that, for all the bad he did and the horrible grief he caused, Fred Phelps produced at least one outstanding creation, his son Nathan.
The Lessons of My Father by Nathan Phelps
“Fred Phelps is now the past. The present and the future are for the living. Unfortunately, Fred’s ideas have not died with him, but live on, not just among the members of Westboro Baptist Church, but among the many communities and small minds that refuse to recognize the equality and humanity of our brothers and sisters on this small planet we share. I will mourn his passing, not for the man he was, but for the man he could have been. I deeply mourn the grief and pain felt by my family members denied their right to visit him in his final days. They deserved the right to finally have closure to decades of rejection, and that was stolen from them.
Even more, I mourn the ongoing injustices against the LGBT community, the unfortunate target of his 23 year campaign of hate. His life impacted many outside the walls of the WBC compound, uniting us across all spectrums of orientation and belief as we realized our strength lies in our commonalities, and not our differences. How many times have communities risen up together in a united wall against the harassment of my family? Differences have been set aside for that cause, tremendous and loving joint efforts mobilized within hours…and because of that, I ask this of everyone – let his death mean something. Let every mention of his name and of his church be a constant reminder of the tremendous good we are all capable of doing in our communities.
The lessons of my father were not unique to him, nor will this be the last we hear of his words, which are echoed from pulpits as close as other churches in Topeka, Kansas, where WBC headquarters remain, and as far away as Uganda. Let’s end the support of hateful and divisive teachings describing the LGBT community as “less than,” “sinful,” or “abnormal.” Embrace the LGBT community as our equals, our true brothers and sisters, by promoting equal rights for everyone, without exception. My father was a man of action, and I implore us all to embrace that small portion of his faulty legacy by doing the same.”
